The Verdict First
This is IVE's most complete album since debut. But "most complete" and "every track slaps" are two different things. After listening to the whole thing, my takeaway is: solid. Very solid. Maybe even a bit too safely solid.
It's been nearly three years since their first full album I've IVE. In that time, IVE went through LOVE DIVE's nationwide smash, I AM's summer frenzy, REBEL HEART's experimental pivot, and last year's mini album IVE SECRET — you can clearly feel them steadily moving toward "maturity." And REVIVE+ is the milestone report card for that journey.
BLACKHOLE: The Title Track Aims High, But the Hook Falls Short
Let's talk about the title track BLACKHOLE.
Yujin said this song reminded her of Interstellar, and after listening I think the comparison is actually quite apt — the production does have this grand, cosmic quality, with synths layered richly and excellent depth. The build from verse to pre-chorus especially, with the drums stacking layer upon layer, makes you feel like it's about to explode —
Then the chorus arrives, and it pulls back.
"La, la, la-la, love flame" — honestly, I listened five or six times and still couldn't remember this hook. The production quality is undeniably high, but for a title track, if your chorus melody doesn't grab people, that's a critical problem. Think back to LOVE DIVE's "narcissistic, my god I love it," After LIKE's "after like," I AM's "I'm what I am" — which one couldn't you hum after one listen?
BLACKHOLE takes the "atmospheric domination" route, leaning on production power rather than melody. This might work in Western markets, but for K-pop where you need to "hook listeners in one shot," I think it falls short.
Production gets a 9, but melodic memorability only a 6.5. Overall, 7.5/10.
BANG BANG: Actually the More "IVE" Track
Compared to BLACKHOLE, the pre-release single BANG BANG actually got me more hooked.
EDM foundation with a swagger-drenched swing intro, the whole song is on the offensive from second one. That confident, almost provocative energy — that's IVE at their most fitting. Wonyoung participated in the lyrics, and you can feel that "I'm the baddest" attitude — on anyone else it might feel over the top, but when Wonyoung says it, you just think, yeah, fair enough.
BANG BANG scored 2026's first all-kill on music charts — IVE's 7th all-kill. Numbers don't lie — the public eats this up.
6 Solo Tracks: Windows Into Each Member's Self-Expression
The most pleasant surprise of this album is actually the 6 member solo tracks. These songs originally premiered during the SHOW WHAT I AM world tour and are now included in the full album.
Yujin "FORCE" — My favorite track on the entire album. Bass-heavy hip-hop foundation with crisp trap beats, produced by Dem Jointz — the same producer who's made beats for Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre. The "big sister" aura Yujin radiates in this song is, honestly, more convincing than any title track. At 3:24, it's the longest track on the album, but it doesn't feel long at all.
Liz "Unreal" — Another surprise. Alternative rock direction, completely different from anything IVE has done before. Liz wrote the lyrics herself, and her clear yet explosive voice fits this arrangement unexpectedly well. If I had to pick "IVE's most underrated member," Liz would be number one.
Rei "In Your Heart" — The shortest track at just 2:03, but delightfully nimble. Lyrics in Japanese, Korean, and English, with Rei participating in composition. Though brief, you can tell this girl's musical taste is on point.
Wonyoung "8" — The most controversial track. "Count to five, six, seven, I 8 (ate)" — that kind of pun-heavy lyricism, plus the direct Miuccia Prada reference — some find it coolly confident, others find it vapid showing off. Personally, I think — this is just Wonyoung. You don't have to like it, but you have to admit that "not caring what you think" attitude is itself a style. She wrote the lyrics herself — authenticity is enough.
Gaeul "Odd" — Dreamy vibes, showcasing her mid-to-low register charm. Gaeul has always had a lower profile in the group, but this track proves she has her own unique vocal character.
Leeseo "Super ICY" — Produced by UK electronic producer Shift K3Y, with a distinctly "international" electronic texture. Leeseo is the youngest member, but this track's polish is anything but rookie-level.
6 Solo Tracks Overall: 8/10. Everyone found a direction that suits them, with five members participating in lyric writing and Rei in composition. This kind of self-expression awareness is more convincing than any concept photo.
Group B-Sides: Solid But Lacking Surprises
Beyond the two title tracks and six solos, there are four group B-sides: Hush (숨바꼭질), Stuck In Your Head (악성코드), Fireworks, and HOT COFFEE.
Honestly, my reaction after listening to all four was — they're all fine, but none made me want to hit replay. Production quality is there, melodies aren't bad, but they're just missing that little something that makes you go "wow." Fireworks is probably my favorite of the bunch, with a pleasant flowing quality. Stuck In Your Head's "malicious code" metaphor is interesting, but the song itself doesn't fully exploit the concept.
B-Side Overall: 6.5/10. Passing grade, but for a "full album," I expected more.
From "I" to "We": Does the Concept Shift Actually Land?
IVE's concept this time shifts from their past self-centered confidence narrative to a collective "we" narrative — officially described as "independent yet united."
Honestly, the concept is neatly packaged, but I don't think it comes through that strongly in the music. You say BLACKHOLE is about "we"? The lyrics still feel like the same "I'm amazing" playbook. Where I actually felt "collective power" was in the BLACKHOLE MV — the group dance sequences filmed on the Sky Bridge of Lotte World Tower in Jamsil, with that visual impact of "a group burning together."
So this concept shift — the MV and stages delivered, but the songs themselves are one step behind.
An Unavoidable Context: Clashing With BLACKPINK
REVIVE+ dropped the same week (February 23) as BLACKPINK's comeback EP Deadline (February 27). Two top-tier girl groups going head-to-head — that's rare even in K-pop history.
I'm not interested in pointless data comparisons — the two groups have different styles, audiences, and market positioning. Forced comparisons are meaningless. But one thing is worth noting: IVE choosing to drop a 12-track full album at this moment is itself a statement. Not a tentative EP, not a safe mini album, but a full album brimming with sincerity. From this perspective, REVIVE+ definitely delivers on quantity.

Final Thoughts
Three years ago with I've IVE, IVE was still in their "who am I" phase — every song declaring "I'm here, I'm the strongest." Three years later with REVIVE+, they're attempting to tell more complex stories, letting each member find their own voice, and trying to strike a balance between "pop" and "artistry."
The direction is right. But between "attempting" and "achieving," there's still a gap.
Where's IVE's ceiling? I don't think this album has reached it. But they're clearly headed in that direction, and more steadily than most groups.
Looking forward to album three. Just please — don't let the chorus be just "la la la" again.
